Bedford village was originally settled in 1680. The town's importance grew during the Colonial period and served during the Revolutionary War. The village green and historic buildings date to the 18th and early 19 centuries. The Bedford Village Historic District was established by local ordinance and is listed on both the New York State and National Register of Historic Places. A museum in the Court House is open to the public.
The Bedford Oak is a symbol of the Town of Bedford perserving it's beauty and heritage. A white oak, with a span of approximately 130 feet and a girth of 23 feet. It is believed to be 200 years old. In the late 1970's construction was planned on a neighboring property, a group of concerned citizens purchased the property providing a permanent home for the tree. They were so successful in raising funds that after the purchase of the property the remaining money funds the care of the tree.
The Town of Bedford celebrated its 300th birthday celebration June of 1980 with great pomp and pride. The Village Green is in in the heart of Bedford Village. The Green is a large triangle of common park space surrounded by homes, churches and shops.
The Bedford Riding Lanes Association (BRLA) offers for a small membership fee, l00 linear miles of riding trails. It is a equine lover's paradise. The riding trails wind through a historic system of dirt roads, trails, fields and dense forests with views of the countryside. The Association maintains the trail system, hosts hunter paces, get togethers for landowners and trail clean-up days. They encourage homeowners to open their land to new trails.
The Bedford Central School District comprises five elementary schools. The Fox Lane Middle School and Fox Lane High School are housed on the same campus. Approximately 95% of Fox Lane High School graduates continue their formal education. The high school has dozens of sport teams and clubs, as well as many dramatic and musical organizations for students to join. The Bedford Central School district also offers two alternative programs to meet the special needs of high school students: the Academic Community for Educational Success (ACES) in Bedford Hills and the Hillside Program in nearby Mount Kisco.
The town of Bedford offers a multitude of recreational facilities such as golf, tennis, cross-country skiing, hiking, fishing etc. There are numerous nature preserves and sanctuaries in the area where one can find organized nature walks, study groups and activities for children. There is a town park near the village that offers a community pool, ball fields and a summer camp program. A movie theater is in the heart of town as well as a charming library.
Bedford residents have much to be proud of and enjoy.
