HARTSDALE Hartsdale is a charming hamlet in the unincorporated section of the Town of Greenburg. It is spread over four square miles dotted with shopping centers, two business districts and a population that is rich in diversity. It has maintained a rural quality with working farms, old estates and even a pet cememtery, the Hartsdale Canine Cementery. Shopping is plentiful, including the Hart's corner area, with a variety of small shops and the Dalewood Shopping Center on Central Park Avenue. The Bronx River Parkway and Sprain Parkway provide easy access to all of Westchester and nearby New York City. The bus line from White Plains to Manhattan passes through Hartsdale on Central Avenue. Every type of housing imaginable is represented, Poets' Corner with it's 26 street named for poets is typical. Most of the homes were built in the l950's but some dae to the 1920's. There are Cape Cods, colonials, ranches and split levels on lots averaging 75 x 100 feet. Older homes are centered around the Hartssdale train station. Manor Woods, with it's namesake wooded hills have streets of Tudors, Colonials and Mediterraneans. Hartsdale has a wide variety of coops and condiminiums too. The Greenburg School District No.7 serves the educational needs of the residents. It has two elementary schools, Juniper Hill for K - lst grade and Highview for 2nd and 3rd grades. The elementary schools offer instruction in foreign languages and have a gifted and talented program. An intermediate school and the Woodlands Junior/Senior High School are situated on 190 acres of the former estate of Felix Warbur, the financier. Woodlands graduates find acceptances at the finest colleges and universities in the nation. The Recreational Facilities have 19 tennis courts and 7 pools at the A.F. Veteran Park in nearby Arsley. The Fairview - Greenburgh Community Center in White Plains. The Scarsdale Golf Club, a private 18-hole course. Several other courses surround the area. The Greenburgh Recreational Departments also offers a wide range of sports and arts and crafts programs. There is a six week summer day camp program for young residents. |
